The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is a community of academics from across the University of Southampton, whose interests and research are linked to the marine/maritime realm. By working across the traditional disciplinary divides, we can better address today’s global marine & maritime challenges that include, but are not restricted to, decarbonisation, climate change, maritime efficiency, and better protection of marine environments.

We foster new research collaborations, educate the next generation of maritime leaders, and generate knowledge and intelligence for businesses of all sizes, government at all scales and organisations of all kinds. We seek to recruit up to 3 future-looking visionary researchers with strong interests in the oceans and the desire and ability to undertake multidisciplinary research, which the role will involve you doing. Applications are sought from individuals who are working towards, or have a PhD or equvilent professional qualification and experience in marine or maritime, working in any traditional discipline field (e.g. engineering and the physical sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, law, business, arts or humanities) providing you work in the ocean space and have track record or demonstrated ability to carry out multi-disciplinary research. We seek applicants with strong digital and communications skills.
The SMMI Research Fellows will join a large community of scholars working across the marine and maritime space. These are unique opportunities for researchers with the drive to address key marine or maritime challenges.
The role will be initially be awarded for a 2 year period with the opportunity for extension for an extra 1 year.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
