Full time starting salary is normally in the range £51,034 to £59,135, with potential progression once in post to £77,108
We are looking to recruit a teaching-focused senior lecturer with expertise in mental health teaching (broadly defined) to support and oversee the MSc Mental Health and contribute to related teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the School of Psychology.
The Institute for Mental Health (IMH) supports a popular and high-quality interdisciplinary MSc programme in mental health for which significant expansion and diversification is planned. The new appointment will play a leading role in programme development and enhancement, and delivery of this ambitious research-intensive teaching agenda.
Summary of Role
The successful candidate will progress promptly to leading the interdisciplinary Psychology MSc Mental Health programme and contribute to teaching on related programmes and modules across Psychology postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. In addition to coordinating the integration of the Mental Health programme with other courses in the School and College of Life and Environmental Sciences, they will lead modules, deliver relevant lectures, workshops and seminars, mark formative and summative assessments (e.g., projects and essays), supervise research project groups, offer pastoral support, and contribute to teaching-related administration. The successful candidate will have teaching/research interests in fundamental and/or applied aspects of mental health research, ideally with a sub-focus on youth mental health, and have experience at teaching and assessment at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The role will contribute to the whole range of teaching and administration responsibilities commensurate with the appointment grade.
Teaching is likely to include a substantial contribution to: a) the leadership, management, development (including programme/module review) and delivery of teaching and assessment at postgraduate level and some at undergraduate level; and b) enhancement of the student experience or employability. The role will typically also involve developing and advising others, including: a) providing expert advice to staff and students, and b) developing and advising others on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
Teaching focussed role-holders should advance the practice of teaching in their modules within the School, take a role in leading curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic support. They should also deliver excellent teaching and that inspires students, and is informed by discipline-based research. They should have experience of and/or a commitment to CPD and Distance Learning (DL) offerings within Psychology and IMH teaching programmes.
Management and administration wil involve contributions at departmental and school levels, and/or making an important contribution to some managerial/leadership (e.g., working groups) within the University. This may include developing and making substantial contributions to public engagement, widening participation, Schools outreach, and developing shared teaching with national and international partners or similar activities at department/School level or further within the University.
The postholder will:
- play an important and sustained role in the recruitment and admission of students;
- they may co-supervise, with a research focused or research and teaching-focused member of staff, doctoral students to completion;
- contribute at a senior level on a sustained basis in learning and teaching. This will include:
a) leading the development of new and appropriate approaches to learning and teaching.
b) acting as adviser for teaching and learning methods through excellent practice and mentoring other colleagues
c) leading the design and/or co-ordination of programme or equivalent activities across the School or Department
d) contributing to the development of teaching and learning policy more widely than the School
e) contributing to debate nationally about policy, methods & practices through publications, conference activity and roles that advance quality in the discipline
f) leading the development and management of assessment strategies within the School/Department
g) leading sustained high value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) that enhances the student experience and/or or employability, and is of manifest benefit to learning and teaching in the College and the University
- include in their learning and teaching responsibilities some of the following as agreed:
- a) teaching and examining courses at a range of levels
b) planning and reviewing own teaching approaches and acting as a mentor to encourage others to do the same
c) developing programme proposals and making substantial contributions to the design of teaching programme more widely in the Department or School, as appropriate
d) undertaking and developing a full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining
e) using appropriate approaches to learning and teaching in their field
f) developing and advising other on learning and teaching tasks and methods.
- make a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject that advances teaching through the enhancement of practice, the development of teaching resources and/or through practice-based research;
- contribute to debate nationally about new approaches to policy, methods and practices through publications, conferences, and activities that advance quality in the field;
- engage in external quality assurance activities related to teaching, e.g. External examining.
- Lead activities in the School and represent the School on College/ University committees or working groups. This will include some but not all of the responsibilities listed below.
- a) Make an important contribution to the development and running of the Department or School, for example, leading activity on teaching assessment.
b) Develop and manage staff and resources in support of teaching activities
c) Make important contributions to the development of the School’s and/or learning and teaching strategy
d) Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with sustained high value impact of manifest benefit to the College and the University

f) Lead/project manage a team to devise and implement a new and/or revised process (e.g. new programme or a recruitment drive)
g) Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major teaching activities

- Normally, hold a higher Degree (usually PhD) in a relevant Subject area or a closely related discipline or equivalent qualifications and/or experience.
