The Department of Genetics, Faculty of AgriSciences, is a dynamic multifaceted department with a wide variety of research activities.
The incumbent will lecture Biometry at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and maintain a research affiliation with the recently founded School for Data Science and Computational Thinking.


The School for Data Science and Computational Thinking was launched with a vision to be the best institution in data science and computational thinking in and for Africa.
Its broad mandates include facilitating inter-faculty research, collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders and building capacity in the area in South Africa, Africa and globally.


This vacancy is ideally suited for a person with a background in Statistics, Data Science, Biometry and/or Quantitative Genetics.

Die Departement Genetika, Fakulteit AgriWetenskappe, is '’n dinamiese veelsydige departement met ’'n wye verskeidenheid navorsingsaktiwiteite.
Die posbekleër sal Biometrie doseer op voor- en nagraadse vlak en ‘n navorsingsaffiliasie handhaaf met die nuutgestigde Skool vir Datawetenskap en Rekenaardenke.

Die Skool vir Datawetenskap en Rekenaardenke was gestig met die visie om die beste instelling te wees in datawetenskap en rekenaardenke in en vir Afrika.
Die mandaat van die skool sluit in die fasilitering van inter-fakulteit navorsing, samewerking met beide interne en eksterne belanghebbendes, asook die ontwikkeling van kapasiteit in die veld in Suid-Afrika, Afrika en werêldwyd.


Hierdie vakature is by uitstek geskik vir 'n kandidaat met 'n agtergrond in onder meer Statistiek, Datawetenskap, Biometrie en/of Kwantitatiewe Genetika.

Duties/ Pligte
 

•    Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biometry;
•    Establishing a research group and participating in research activities within the context of the Department and School for Data Science and Computational Thinking;
•    Continuously publishing research results by means of articles and congress papers;
•    Recruiting and supervising postgraduate students;
•    Securing research funding;
•    Participating in academically relevant departmental and faculty activities, as required.
 


•    Voor- en nagraadse onderrig in Biometrie;
•    Vestiging van ‘n navorsingsgroep en deelname aan die navorsingsaktiwiteite binne die konteks van die Department en die Skool vir Datawetenskap en Rekenaardenke;
•    Deurlopende bekendmaking van navorsingsresultate by wyse van publikasies en kongresbydraes;
•    Die werwing van, en studieleiding aan, nagraadse studente;
•    Die werwing van navorsingsfondse;
•    Deelname aan akademies toepaslike departementele en fakulteitsaktiwiteite, soos nodig.

Job Requirements/ Pos Vereistes
 

•    PhD in Statistics, Data Science, Biometry and/or Quantitative Genetics;
•    Good verbal and written communication skills in English;
•    Relevant and appropriate experience in offering undergraduate Biometry and/or Statistics modules at a tertiary level.

For appointment as Lecturer:
•    Publications in peer-reviewed journals in Statistics, Data Science, Biometry and/or Quantitative Genetics.

For appointment as Senior Lecturer:
•    Proven and growing research record in recognised international journals concomitant with the level of appointment;
•    Proven record of successful supervision of postgraduate students concomitant with the level of appointment
•    Record of successful grant applications concomitant with the level of appointment.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research to demonstrate their knowledge and communication skills.

 

•    ‘n PhD in Statistiek, Datawetenskap, Biometrie en/of Kwantitatiewe Genetika;
•    Goeie mondelinge en skriftelike kommunikasievaardighede in Engels;
•    Toepaslike ervaring in die aanbieding van voorgraadse en nagraadse Biometrie en/of Statistiek modules op tersiêre vlak.

Vir aanstelling as Lektor:
•    Publikasies in eweknie-beoordeelde vaktydskrifte in Statistiek, Datawetenskap, Biometrie en/of Kwantitatiewe Genetika.

Vir aanstelling as Senior Lektor:
•    Bewese en groeiende navorsingsrekord in erkende internasionale joernale;
•    Bewese rekord van suksesvolle studieleiding aan nagraadse studente gepaardgaande met die vlak van aanstelling;
•    Rekord van suksesvolle befondsingsaansoeke gepaardgaande met die vlak vanaanstelling.

Aansoekers wat genooi word vir ‘n onderhoud, moet ‘n lesing aanbied oor hul onlangse navorsing ten einde hul kennis en kommunikasievaardighede te demonstreer

Recommendation/ Aanbevelling

•    Post-doctoral or appropriate academic/industrial research experience;
•    Communication skills in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa;
•    An interest in expanding teaching and learning technologies;
•    NRF rating;
•    Accreditation by a relevant statutory professional body.

 

•    Nadoktorale of toepaslike navorsingservaring in die akademie/industrie;
•    Kommunikasievaardighede in Afrikaans en/of isiXhosa;
•    Belangstelling om onderrig en leer tegnologie uit te brei;
•    NNS gradering;
•    Akkreditasie deur ʼn toepaslike professionele statutêre liggaam.
