Job Purpose

  • Carry out a rapid evidence based assessment (i.e. critical literature review) of existing sensor technologies and suggest those that may be appropriate for the task in hand
  • Trial a number of the identified sensor technologies in a variety of environmental conditions to determine the most suitable combination of sensors for detecting road surface defects
  • Explore computer processing techniques which may be used to process the data produced by the sensors so that the type and extent of road surface defects can be identified and quantified.
  • Select, programme and trial identified computer processing techniques
  • Trial the sensor / computer processing techniques system at a variety of sites in a variety of conditions.
  • Contribute to publicising the work via per reviewed articles.


Person Specification

  • First degree in an engineering, maths, or computer science discipline and a higher degree, PhD, relevant to the research area (or close to passing a higher degree) or equivalent qualifications
  • Computer programming skills
  • Fluency in computer based signal processing approaches such as traditional signal processing methods (filtering, signal enhancement, segmentation, pattern recognition, feature extraction, measurement and description) and / or machine learning (e.g. neural networks, evolutionary computation).
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Good communication and writing skills
