An excellent opportunity exists for a three-years Research Fellow position based in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton. This is part of an ESRC GCRF-funded research project with the University of York (UK), FLACSO/Honduras, University of Maranhao (Brazil, Fiocruz (Brazil) and Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) that will analyse development-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health needs and rights of migrant women and adolescent girls displaced from Central America to Mexico and from Venezuela to Brazil and Colombia. The project team is led by Professor Pia Riggirozzi (Southampton).
The Research Fellow will be part of a team that will develop new quantitative and qualitative empirical evidence on the impact of displacement on the SRH needs of women and adolescent girls in Central America and Venezuela; co-produce research with non-governmental and civil society organisations working with displaced women and adolescent girls to uncover the lived experiences of their right to health in relation to SRH, and analyse governmental and non-governmental responses in view of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Specifically, the Research Fellow will be based at the University of Southampton and will be responsible for developing systematic literature reviews of (i) the SRH needs and care of displaced women and adolescents in context of crisis and protracted displacement; and on interventions to empower displaced women and girls and (ii) legal and philosophical arguments concerning shared duties to displaced communities and individuals across national, regional and international contexts.
The Research Fellow will also conduct research, in English and Spanish, in support of the whole programme; undertake fieldwork in Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Brazil; analyse data, contribute to written research outcomes and dissemination activities; and collaborate in the design of impact material and activities, including production of video documentaries and photovoice outputs.
The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world Universities and one of the UK’s top 15 research–intensive universities. The Department of Politics & International Relations (PAIR) was ranked 5th in the UK for the quality of its research outputs in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The department is internationally recognised for its research on democracy and public opinion.
Successful candidates will have completed or be near to completing a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in the social sciences, and expertise in gender, health and migration studies, or other relevant field, and possess experience in qualitative research. The candidate will be fluent in written and spoken Spanish as this is critical to the work.
The position is fixed-term, tenable for 36 months starting as early as possible and by 1st March 2020 at the latest. You will be line-managed by Professor Pia Riggirozzi but will also report to Dr Sarah Neal (Department of Demography at the University of Southampton).
