Job Summary

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge in the area of the management, integration, and system-wide analysis of rail industry data, with a focus on delivery of the UKRRIN Research Data Platform. The successful applicant will sit within the data management team of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE).

  • Deliver technical work within specified research grants and projects and contribute to the development of new research projects
  • Operate primarily within the area of industry data management and analysis
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results
  • Contribute to generation of research funding
  • Contribute to licensing or spin out deals with demonstrated commercial success (such as revenues, asset or company sales, IP generated) and/or public understanding of the discipline or similar

 

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, in the field of the management and analysis of industrial data sets, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Design, develop and carry out data analysis using the tools provided as part of the UKRRIN research data platform, on behalf of the UKRRIN stakeholders
  • Assist with the day to day management of technicians working on data platform projects
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge thus gained in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

 

Person Specification

  • Degree in a STEM discipline and a higher degree in Computer Science. Ideally, you will hold a PhD in an area relevant to the operation of the UKRRIN Research Data Platform
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of research in the use of blockchains for the exchange and management of rail industry data
  • Fluency in the languages, techniques and methodologies used in large-scale industrial data analysis, and the skills to contribute to the development of new approaches in response to industry challenges
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, including demonstrable experience of presenting at academic conferences, industry meetings, and public outreach events
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Demonstrable ability to contribute to the planning and organisation of the programme of research to be delivered using the UKRRIN Research Data Platform
  • Experience of co-ordinating own work and ability to manage work of assigned technicians, ensuring effective collaboration with the wider team and avoiding conflicts of interest or duplication of research effort
