You will join our Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics (AFM) Research Group at the University of Southampton which comprises of experts in theoretical, computational and experimental fluid mechanics and our aim is to provide an environment in which these different approaches can be combined and focused on particular topics of practical importance. You will join a vibrant team of other postdoctoral researchers and graduate students working in different areas of fluid mechanics ranging from environmental flows to hypersonics. 

You will work with Dr. Ralf Deiterding and Prof. Neil Sandham and concentrate on using a high-order accurate Cartesian hybrid WENO/Centered Difference (CD) method with embedded boundary capability to carry out direct numerical simulations (DNS) of fully compressible turbulent boundary layer flows over realistic rough surfaces. The WENO/CD solver is already fully implemented in the massively parallel adaptive solver framework AMROC and has been extensively validated. The aim of the present work is to understand how key surface quantities, like for instance heat flux, are related to flow and roughness. To this end, post-processing specific to turbulent flows over rough surfaces will need to be implemented. A database of compressible flows at various Mach numbers over several surfaces will be built and analyzed in order to find correlations that are intended to inform system-scale CFD of hypersonic aerothermodynamics. Simulations will be run on the University of Southampton’s supercomputer Iridis 5.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Aerospace Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Applied Mathematics / Civil Engineering / Computer Science with specialisation in computational fluid dynamics and have experience of direct numerical simulation (DNS) and/or large eddy simulation (LES) for compressible high Reynolds number flows and/or supersonic aerothermodynamics. In addition you will have good programming background in C++ and Fortran as well as parallel high-performance computing experience in a Linux environment.  A publication record in computational fluid dynamics, specifically, large eddy simulation or direct numerical simulation of compressible flows is desirable.

This work is carried out in behalf of the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and preference will be given to nationals of the UK, EU, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand.

This post is fixed term until the 31st March 2022 due to funding restrictions.
