The NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Inflammation opened on 1 April 2017 with the aim of using cutting edge experimental medicine to accelerate access to, and adoption of, drugs, devices and diagnostics tests for patients living with chronic inflammatory diseases. The NIHR Birmingham BRC brings together the expertise of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) and the University of Birmingham, both members of Birmingham Health Partners (BHP), and is one of 20 NHS and University partnerships across England that have been awarded funding through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The BRC Inflammation comprises a number of themes with the overarching aim of the Sarcopenia theme being to further understand and overcome the sarcopenia of chronic inflammatory disease (rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and chronic liver disease). The Inflammatory Sarcopenia theme is led by Professor Janet Lord with sub-theme leads Dr Carolyn Greig, Dr Leigh Breen, and Dr Gareth Lavery. The post holder will join the research group of Dr Carolyn Greig in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham, while also working closely with the Sarcopenia theme lead, and sub-theme leads as well as clinical and allied health professions staff within the NIHR BRC and the NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, University Hospital Birmingham.

  • Undergraduate degree (min 2:1) in Physiology, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Life Sciences or related discipline. PhD in Physiology or other relevant life science
  • Track record of research in musculoskeletal ageing and health/ sarcopenia and skeletal muscle metabolism
  • High level analytical capability
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Track record of writing grants and journal articles
