Ranked in the top one percent of global universities, Southampton is a leading research university of international standing. Our Biological Sciences department spans major research themes in Biomedical Sciences, Environmental Biosciences, and Molecular & Cellular Biosciences. Biological Sciences at our Highfield Campus is located in a £50M award-winning purpose-designed building. We sit at the heart of major University interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS, http://www.southampton.ac.uk/ifls), which focuses on the interface between the life sciences, medicine, health sciences, the physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, environmental, and ocean and earth sciences.
Over the next two years, we will grow by recruiting up to three academic staff across a range of disciplines in Biological Sciences. These new appointments will build critical mass in research activity and profile.
As a first stride in this process, we seek outstanding candidates in any area of the biological sciences, defined in the broadest sense, for a full Professorship in Biological Sciences. We welcome interest from candidates in fields including, but not limited to: cell and developmental biology including epigenetics; computational biology including/with a focus on bioinformatics; ecology and evolutionary biology; microbiology and biofilms; molecular biology with a focus on fundamental mechanisms; neuroscience; and plant sciences.
The successful candidate will play a leading role in the recruitment of a Lectureship (Assistant Professor) in a complementary area and with our recruitment-drive more generally to realise the transformation of Biological Sciences at Southampton.
Successful candidates will demonstrate high personal scientific standing in their field with an outstanding track record of publishing in leading international journals; research leadership; evidence of attracting significant research funding and the ability and readiness to take advantage of the multi-disciplinary research opportunities offered by the University. Experience of working in, or interfacing with, industry and/or science policy is of interest.
With over 150 doctoral and masters level students and successful teaching programmes in Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Ecology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, and Zoology, we educate and train students across a broad spectrum of the biosciences. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong track record of inspiring and mentoring students at undergraduate and graduate levels.
