Applications are invited for a prestigious PhD studentship to work on an exciting interdisciplinary project between the Schools of Chemistry and Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton
The project is funded for 4 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in either Chemistry, Biology or related discipline. The project is aimed at understanding the role of protein conformation at the nanoscale which is essential for the early detection, diagnostic screening and the development of preventative therapeutic interventions in diseases such as Alzheimers. To-date the molecular mechanism and the role conformation plays in protein aggregation and toxicity is not well understood. As part of this project the successful candidate will develop novel in situ physico-chemical characterisation tools for assessing protein aggregation. This will be achieved by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) executed through the tip of an Atomic Force microscopy (AFM) probe also called tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) which can yield chemical level resolution on single molecules.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Iris Nandhakumar, Department of Chemistry, Email: email@example.com, Tel: +44 (0) 2380 59 6877.
A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).
Full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
How To Apply:
Applications should be made online here selecting “PhD Chemistry (Full time)” as the programme. Please enter Iris Nandhakumar under the proposed supervisor.
