The development of denser, faster and less energy-consuming non-volatile memory is of great importance to innovations in modern information technology. Resistive memories have attracted great research interest for next-generation non-volatile memories due to potentials for down-scaling and superior switching performance. For instance, one essential requirement for the wide commercialisation of resistive memory is its compatibility with CMOS back-end-of-line (BEOL) processes. SiC based dielectrics have recently been successfully integrated into the BEOL applications, making SiC-based resistive memory extremely advantageous in integrating into the BEOL interconnects with low cost and easy implementation.
This PhD project is focused on developing a new generation of BEOL SiC based resistive memory devices. You will have the opportunity to join a dynamic research team and have access to advanced micro- and nanofabrication as well as electronic characterization facilities in the state-of-art Southampton Nanofabrication Centre. You will benefit from academic research expertise from a dynamic supervisory team as well as the possibility of collaborating with a potential industry partner.
You will join the Sustainable Electronic Technologies Research Group (SET) in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). It leads in research and education activities covering a broad range of topics on nanotechnology, electronics and electrical engineering. As PhD candidate you will need to have education/experience in electronics, materials science, engineering or other relevant disciplines. You should have, or expect to gain, a first or upper second-class degree in a related subject (Electronics, Materials, Engineering). You will also be expected to demonstrate excellent communication and writing skills.

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).
