This is an opportunity for an academic with an interest in Maritime Engineering, especially in maritime structures and design, Acoustic Engineering, especially in underwater acoustics, or Control Engineering, especially in mechatronics and robotics, to contribute to the evolution of our successful teaching and research.

Engineering at Southampton has a strong international reputation for high quality research and as part of the wider Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences was ranked top in research power in the UK for General Engineering in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF). Due to its reputation for excellence in education and research it has partnered with Harbin Engineering University (HEU), China to deliver a Joint Education Institute at HEU. Part of your role will be to help shape and deliver this exciting new initiative.

You will be focused on a future maritime sector enabled by smart systems, digitilisation and design driven by the needs of sustainability and zero carbon, your research team will be based on the Boldrewood Innovation campus and will be able to use the new National Infrastructure Laboratory for advanced structural testing – from small to large scale as well as the Boldrewood tank – 138 x 6 x 3.5 m euiqpped with the latest measuerent technologies and capable of 12 m/s tests and waves upto 0.7 m high.

Engineering education specialists will be encouraged and supported to develop innovative approaches to engineering education delivery, working in collaboration with others across the university such as our Centre for Higher Education Practice. Our opportunities for career development and promotion for teaching specialists match those for our more research-focussed colleagues. Your contribution will shape the direction of our engineering programmes, by inspiring our students to meet society’s future needs in a sustainable manner.

To succeed in one of these challenging roles, you will need a relevant PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience), a recognised HE teaching qualification and a track-record of published research or education development. Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate others. 

This is a full time permanent post with a requirement to spend 6 months per year working in Harbin, China at our Joint Education Institute with Harbin Engineering University (HEU). During the annual period spent at HEU, you will undertake teaching, student support and programme management roles in partnership with staff from HEU. You will be joined periodically by members of our ‘flying faculty’ teaching team. There will also be opportunities to work on programme development (education focussed appointments) or to undertake research (balanced appointments). Accommodation in China will be provide free of charge during your stay. Duties during the period when you are not in China will be managed to give you every opportunity to meet your career ambitions.
