The Department studies the ancient cultures and languages of the Mediterranean and Western Asia and offers modules in Ancient Cultures, Biblical Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Latin and Classical Legal Culture.

  • Voorgraadse onderrig in Antieke Kulture en Grieks of Latyn;

  • Nagraadse studieleiding (op Honneurs- en Meestersvlak);

  • Navorsing oor onderwerpe in Antieke Kulture en/of Latyn en/of Grieks en publikasie van bevindinge;

  • Aktiewe betrokkenheid by alle Departementele aktiwiteite;

  • Aktiewe betrokkenheid by gemeenskapsinteraksieprojekte;

  • Die uitvoer van alle nodige administratiewe take.

  • Undergraduate teaching of Ancient Cultures and Latin or Greek;

  • Postgraduate supervision (on Honours and Master’s level);

  • Researching topics in Ancient Cultures and/or Latin and/or Greek and publishing research findings;

  • Active involvement in all Departmental activities;

  • Active involvement in community interaction projects;

  • Performing all necessary administrative tasks.

  • ‘n MA in Antieke Kulture of Latyn of Grieks of `n verwante veld;

  • Bewese potensiaal vir navorsing (bv. in die kwaliteit van die Honneurs- of Meestersprojekte; artikel(s) ingedien vir publikasie);

  • Indiening van `n doktorale voorstel en registrasie vir `n PhD in Antieke Kulture of Latyn of Grieks binne die eerste 18 maande van aanstelling;

  • Ervaring in die onderrig van Antieke Kulture of Latyn of Grieks;

  • Akademiese taalvaardigheid in Engels;

  • Vermoë om onafhanklik en in `n span te werk;

  • Vermoë om informasietegnologie te gebruik in die onderrig en bestudering van Antieke Kulture en Latyn of Grieks;

  • Vermoë om goed te funksioneer in `n meertalige omgewing.

  • An MA in Ancient Cultures or Latin or Greek or a related field;

  • Demonstrated potential for research (e.g. in the quality of Honours or Masters’ projects; article(s) submitted for publication);

  • Submission of a doctoral proposal and registration for a PhD in Ancient Cultures or Latin or Greek within the first 18 months of appointment;

  • Experience in the teaching of Ancient Cultures or Latin or Greek;

  • Academic language proficiency in English;

  • Ability to work independently and in teams;

  • Ability to use information technology in the teaching and study of Ancient Cultures and Latin or Greek;

  • Ability to function well in a multilingual environment.

  • Kennis van enige ander verwante velde (byvoorbeeld Regte of Filosofie);

  • Voorlegging van `n voorstel vir `n PhD in Antieke Kulture of Latyn of Grieks as deel van die aansoek;

  • Voorlegging van voltooide hoofstukke van `n PhD in Antieke Kulture of Latyn of Grieks as deel van die aansoek;

  • Kennis van Grieks of Latyn, bykomend tot spesialisasie in die ander taal;

  • Vaardigheid in ‘n ander Suid-Afrikaanse taal.

  • Knowledge of any related areas (e.g. Law or Philosophy);

  • Submission of a proposal for a PhD in Ancient Cultures or Latin or Greek as part of the application;

  • Submission of completed chapters of a PhD in Ancient Cultures or Latin or Greek as part of the application;

  • Knowledge of Greek or Latin, in addition to specialisation in the other language;

  • Proficiency in another South African language.
