A Clinical Lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine post is available for 4 years or until CCT date (whichever is sooner). The post provides the opportunity for higher and advanced sub-specialist specialist training in cardiovascular medicine alongside research and contribution to teaching in a variety of cardiovascular subspecialties. The clinical duties of the post will rotate between the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHBFT), and City Hospital, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBHT).
The postholder will have responsibilities for the care of inpatients and outpatients with the full range of cardiovascular problems, and teaching and assessment of medical students and postgraduate students.
Research is a key component of these lecturer appointments with 50% of the timetable allocated for this purpose. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will undertake a programme of research in line with the current research interests in cardiovascular medicine within the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, College of Medical and Dental Sciences, University of Birmingham. The College houses state-of-the–art technologies and expertise to facilitate the research career of the successful applicant. These include the £28M Institute of Biomedical Research, which includes access to core technologies including DNA sequencing, proteomic and metabolomic facilities and advanced imaging facilities. The Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility at QEHB provides a range of clinical cardiovascular research facilities including dedicated inpatient and outpatient accommodation, staffed by trained personnel. This is soon to be linked to an HTA approved tissue bio-repository and the new Institute for Translational Medicine. The Clinical Trials Unit within the College is one of the largest in the UK and provides access to essential skills (statistics, trial design, randomization and outcomes) for clinical trial activity. In addition, the Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences at its City Hospital base has facilities for clinical and laboratory research, including a dedicated thrombosis and vascular biology laboratory (the Haemostasis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Unit), clinical trials and vascular imaging facilities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Individual and Group Research Projects.
- To perform clinical and/or laboratory based research studies complementing the academic interests of the Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences.
- Attendance at research group meetings and the seminar programme at the centre for Cardiovascular Sciences is anticipated.
2. Analysis of data from experimental models and subsequent presentation and publication.
- To apply statistical methods to analyse scientific study data.
- To prepare study findings in a format appropriate for speech or poster presentation.
- To write research papers based on the findings of the studies performed in a format appropriate for publication in scientific and medical journals.
3. Participate in writing grant and research ethics application.
- To prepare applications to the Research Ethics Committee for the approval of proposed studies.
- To prepare grant applications for the funding of proposed future studies, to bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council.
4. Contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching programmes for a variety of courses including the MB ChB, BMedSc and BDS courses.
5. Actively manages equality, diversity and inclusion through monitoring and evaluation and actively challenging unacceptable behaviour.
50% w.t.e. as clinical registrar in Cardiovascular Medicine at a clinical unit, as determined by the West Midlands Higher Specialist Training Committee for Cardiology (see below).
It is anticipated that the Clinical Lecturer will rotate, probably annually with other Clinical Lecturers in Cardiovascular Medicine, to provide maximal clinical experience.
The post holder will be expected to play an active role in delivering bedside and small group teaching to clinical medical students (no more than 2 hours per week). In addition they will be required to undertake occasional lecturing and small group teaching sessions on cardiovascular medicine topics on the undergraduate MBChB, BMedSc and BDS courses. There may be additional duties in helping with FY2 teaching and in the organization of training for SpRs.
Description of Clinical Training Component of Programme
The post attracts specialist trainee status (NTNs), with the clinical components of training as part of the West Midlands cardiovascular speciality programme being delivered in rotation across the University Hospital Birmingham (UHB) NHS FT and Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBH). Clinical placements would be determined by the West Midlands Higher Speciality Training Committee for Cardiovascular Medicine, currently chaired by Dr Sarah Bowater (email: Sarah.Bowater@uhb.nhs.uk) and would provide all the necessary training requirements in cardiovascular medicine and in general internal medicine, when appropriate.
QEHB is a major regional and supra-regional cardiac referral centre with a full range of cardiac medical and surgical services. There are currently 25 consultant cardiologists and 6 consultant surgeons in post. Clinical training on the QEHB site is available at both junior and senior levels. Introductory placements in electrophysiology and pacing, GUCH (grown up congenital heart disease), heart failure, syncope, device therapy and coronary and other cardiovascular disease including atherosclerosis and artery disease are available for junior post holders. Exposure to the pre and post operative care of cardiac surgical patients including ITU care comprises a significant part of the training. Thus, this post offers the opportunity to undergo specialist training in major areas of cardiovascular disease.
City Hospital is part of the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust which has approximately 1200 beds and serves a population of over 500,000 by 2 acute hospitals, City Hospital and Sandwell Hospital. Cardiac services and clinical training opportunities are available at both junior and senior levels. Out of hours training opportunities include the continuing care of cardiology patients and the admission of cardiac emergency patients including those with STEMI for primary PCI. Excellent training in GIM is also available at City Hospital where the medical admissions unit is busy and serves a diverse population.
Unless there are exceptional circumstances, the lecturer will undergo rotation around cardiovascular posts within the Queen Elizabeth and City Hospitals in Birmingham only. This is unlike other specialist trainees in cardiovascular medicine who may rotate to hospitals much further afield including North Staffordshire, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Hereford and Worcester.
On call (rotas are currently 1 in 8 and 1 in 10) duties will be shared between the lecturers and other specialist registrars whilst at QEHB or City, and are non-resident at both sites.
- Full General Medical Council registration
- Membership of Royal College of Physicians, or equivalent
- Must hold NTN/ST
- Must have completed year 3 SpR training/ST 5
- Higher Degree (MD PhD) in a research area related to medicine
- Completion of the 1st year of ST or equivalent
Experience and Skills
- Interest in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
- Experience in research specific to clinical cardiovascular medicine
- Evidence of achievements in research – peer reviewed publications and grant applications
- experience in cardiology
- Must have objective evidence of obtaining high quality peer review publications
- Must have objective evidence of obtaining peer reviewed research funding of high quality
- Experience of laboratory science e.g. haemostasis, vascular biology, flow cytometry, cell culture, PCR, etc
- Ability to work in a team-orientated environment and to work without friction with colleagues
- Ability to develop new techniques and assess their worth
- Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area
- Ability to monitor and evaluate the extent to which equality and diversity legislation, policies, procedures are applied
- Ability to identify issues with the potential to impact on protected groups and take appropriate action
