The University of Adelaide is seeking a dynamic individual with expertise in fields of biological, biochemical or bioprocess engineering. It is a fantastic opportunity for an early career researcher to an interdisciplinary research team of scientists and contribute to the development of novel biomolecules for various applications. You will also supervise and provide training for RHD students.
Our new state of the art laboratory will enable high quality research to be conducted to meet the next generation of challenges like the development of novel biomolecules for specific binding to particles, for stimuli-responsive properties. It will also be equipped to work on aspects of biomolecular engineering, protein expression and purification. The candidate will be encouraged to use their initiative and develop their own research programme to meet the challenges of the future. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to co-supervise RHD students.
The main responsibility of this position is to design recombinant proteins for specific binding, to perform and optimise protein expression and purification. Experience in the areas including protein design, construct design, plasmid and primer design, protein is essential. Experience in supervision of postgraduate students would be advantageous. Using excellent communication and project management skills the candidate will be expected to help develop multi-disciplinary research activities across the University and internationally. Collaboration with key stakeholders internally and external to the University is a key component of the role and the candidate will be expected to achieve key outcomes on a multidisciplinary scale within the school, broader university community and external partners within industry and government agencies.
This project is part of the ARC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Enabling Eco-efficient beneficiation of minerals. The Centre will develop transformational technologies for enabling a competitive and environmentally sustainable future for Australia’s minerals industry through: reduced environmental footprint, significant reductions in energy and water use, higher resources recovery, future leaders to support the sector.
The primary purpose of the position is about the development of novel bioinspired proteins for specific functionalities as part of the ARC CoE project in Prof. Chun-Xia Zhao’s lab.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Design and express new recombinant protein targets using various hosts such as E Coli.
- Purify proteins using various chromatographic techniques including but not limited to IMAC, IEC, HIC, SEC, etc.
- Carry out routine protein characterisation and analyses experiments
- Read relevant literature and keep current
- Provide training to RHD students
- Interact with internal and external collaborators
- Publish scholarly and high-level research papers
- Provide laboratory leadership and supervision of honours and postgraduate students
- Work with colleagues at UofA and externally in the development of new joint research projects including applications for external funding
To be successful you will need:
- A PhD in biochemistry, protein chemistry, molecular biology or related fields.
- Knowledge and skills in molecular biology, cloning technologies, PCR, plasmid and primer design
- Experience in expressing recombinant proteins in various hosts such as E. coli, insect cells
- Expert in protein purification by various chromatographic techniques including but not limited to IMAC, IEC, HIC, SEC etc
- Experience in establishing protein assay techniques and other basic lab skills
