Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a truly unique institution. It is the largest international collaborative university in China and the only one of its kind with dual degree awarding powers, from the Chinese Ministry of Education and from the University of Liverpool.
Founded in 2006 with an initial intake of just 164 students, the university has grown rapidly over the last seven years. We now have over 7,000 students on campus with a further 2,000 studying at Liverpool under a 2+2 articulation agreement. As part of an ambitious expansion agenda, there is a large scale campus development programme providing world-class laboratory and teaching facilities. Having completed the $250m north campus development, construction of the south campus development is already underway, with Phase I set for completion in 2015/16. We aim to have 10,000 students on campus by 2015.
The University is independent, but draws for guidance and experience upon its two parent universities, Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool, both of which are over one hundred years old and highly respected international pioneers.
Learning and Teaching
After an initial foundation year which includes significant English language provision and training in the use of English for academic purposes, teaching and learning in the subsequent three years is all in the medium of English. We offer over thirty undergraduate and eighteen masters degree programmes, which are validated by the University of Liverpool. The student learning and teaching experience is enhanced through internal and external moderation of standards, and a thorough quality assurance process is in operation
XJTLU aims to be a research-led university, and we have committed significant investment to supporting the development of the research careers in China of newly-appointed staff, through the funding of start-up research projects and of doctoral students. Staff regularly apply for and receive external funding from a range of sources.
XJTLU has a number of research priorities:
- Energy futures: social and technological choices
- Human-computer interaction, design, social networks, telecommunication, multi-media
- Finance, risk and hazard management
- Sustainable urbanisation
- Health technologies
- Emerging economies
- Diagnostic markers, therapeutic targets and drug discovery
- Languages, communication and culture
- Nanotechnology and new materials
XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China (just 30 minutes from Shanghai). SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP (£100 billion in 2011). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life with high environmental standards. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there are a variety of shopping facilities, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and a great nightlife. Suzhou is also home to four international schools.
