UTS is a dynamic and innovative research-intensive university in central Sydney that makes a positive impact both locally and globally.
A young and dynamic institution UTS is positioning itself to become a world-leading university of technology and a provider of professionally oriented education that delivers graduates who can successfully work in a global environment. We are renowned for innovative and practice oriented programs, high impact research and deep, enduring partnerships with industry and the professions.
UTS has a growing profile as a research-intensive university.
UTS is known for applied, impact-driven research that responds to industry needs. We provide relevant solutions to current national and international problems – what we call practical innovation. Our strategic goal is to increase the intensity, excellence, impact and reputation of our research to position UTS clearly within the top 10 Australian universities and the top 10 in chosen fields globally by 2020.
We aim to be the preferred research partner for industry, business, government and the professions, and we work closely with our research partners to tackle the challenges and issues that matter to our community, industry and the environment.
Our key technology partnerships with leading universities in greater China, India and Europe, as well as collaborative research in dozens more, provide us with global channels for the creation of new knowledge.
UTS is also committed to embedding innovation, intelligence and entrepreneurial thinking across teaching, research, professional practice and external engagement activities at UTS through its innovation strategy. We’re dedicated to leading the development of future-focused learning experiences, research programs and innovation ecosystems that will enable new ways of living and working.
Our performance over the past five years, coupled with a robust research strategy and significant investment from UTS and industry, has led to a surge in our global rankings and research benchmarking outcomes.
In the Australian Government’s 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) evaluation, 94 per cent of our broad research fields were benchmarked at world standard or above.
The UTS City Campus Master Plan is a once-in-a generation vision to deliver a vibrant and engaging education precinct in one of the world’s great cities. Through the Master Plan, UTS has invested more than $1.3 billion to create a series of new buildings, major upgrades and improved pedestrian connections, right in the heart of Sydney’s southern CBD.
The revitalised campus, which transforms the way we deliver teaching, learning and research, is a blueprint for future infrastructure design. It’s already recognised as one of Australia’s most high profile, future-oriented and student-centric campuses, with purpose-built spaces that support excellence in education.
These spaces include the iconic Dr Chau Chak Wing building, home of the UTS Business School and the first Frank Gehry-designed building in Australia; and the Alumni Green, the ‘green heart’ of a sustainable campus that encourages collaboration and engagement from staff and students alike.
Social justice and the principles of equity and diversity are at the core of everything we do. We champion diversity in our staff and students, promote inclusivity in teaching and learning, and engage fully and vibrantly with the world beyond our campus.
Our key social justice initiatives and achievements include:
Social Impact Framework; Access and Inclusion Plan; WGEA Employer of choice for Gender Equality (one of only three Australian universities to have received the citation each year since inception); SAGE Pilot demonstrates our commitment to increasing the number of women in STEMM through Australia’s Athena Swan-based pilot.
