Nazarbayev University, Graduate School of Business

Kazakhstan

Nazarbayev University is a key component of the national innovation system, and thus its goal is to develop outstanding professionals, leaders and citizens who will become drivers of social progress and economic development in Kazakhstan in the 21st century.

In its short existence, our university has earned a great reputation. Innovations in teaching and technology, adoption of best practices through partnerships with leading universities from around the world, an outstanding physical infrastructure and students’ strong academic performance are some of the elements that make our university unique.

In line with the University’s goal, our mission at the Graduate School of Business is to make a positive impact on society by developing the next generation of business leaders in Kazakhstan and Central Asia through our MBA and Executive Education Programs; and by creating and disseminating impactful knowledge and insights through business research.

The Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business aspires to become recognized as the leading school in Central Asia in the coming years. We intend to be known for the quality of our education, the impact of our research, our international orientation, and our meaningful engagement with the business community.

Our school is structured to be an inspiring ecosystem in which ideas are exchanged and challenged by peers and faculty. Excellent professors will orchestrate and contribute to these discussions with knowledge grounded in interdisciplinary scientific research. Our strategic collaboration with The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in the US will help us develop the capability to deliver superior customer experience and value to our students and corporate clients both in terms of personal development and organizational.

We plan to deliver a full-fledged portfolio with a focus on General Management through MBA programs in different formats and for different target groups ( – executives, part-time, and full-time students) as well as a series of more specialized, shorter non-degree programs for executives, entrepreneurs and professionals at different levels. In addition, we will provide customized programs designed to meet the specific needs of corporate clients.

In 2009, Nazarbayev University established a strategic collaboration with Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business to assist in our ambition to build a world-class business school in Astana.
Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, located in Durham, North Carolina, is an internationally recognized business school with its faculty ranked #1 and its Daytime MBA program ranked #1 in the 2014 Business Week ranking of top business schools. The school has a global network with presence in London, Dubai, New Delhi, Shanghai and St. Petersburg. Fuqua also has a history of innovation, having launched three MBA programs for working professionals and most recently an MMS program.

The collaboration between our schools leverages leadership, faculty and staff expertise in building the NUGSB from the ground up. The initial focus has been to develop high caliber MBA programs that prepare the next generation of business leaders to succeed, while building faculty strength and increasing the research capabilities of the institution.

Astana

Astana is a modern city with a favorable environment attractive for tourists and comfortable for residents and guests of the Kazakh capital to live in.

Astana, the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan since 1997, is situated on a picturesque bank of the Ishim River.

The town of Akmolinsk acquired incorporated status in 1862. It had long been famous for its fairs. Merchants from all regions of Kazakhstan, Russia and the Central Asian countries traveled here. As the development of virgin lands began, the town was renamed Tselinograd and typified the administrative center of an agricultural region.

Since acquiring the status of capital the city’s face has changed dramatically. The architects and builders working in the capital create wonderful architectural ensembles, which harmoniously combine modern design and oriental flair.

Every year the city hosts various international industrial exhibitions, conferences, musical contests and festivals of the Kazakhstani people.

In 1999 by decision of UNESCO, Astana was awarded the title of World City. The city has an opera and Ballet Theater, a drama theater and a variety of museums. The monuments of Astana are a linking element between the new capital and its history, held in esteem by all the people of Kazakhstan.

Astana’s favorable location in the centre of the Eurasian continent makes it an economically advantageous transport, communication and logistics centre, a unique transit bridge between Europe and Asia.
Nowadays Astana besides differing by its refined architecture is also turning into a garden city. The city’s “green belt” is getting wider and accordingly Astana is becoming a green oasis in the centre of huge steppes, being a model of non-polluting megacity. Astana’s mission is to become a cultural and intellectual centre of the Eurasian space and to play a role of the main generator of Kazakhstan’s sustainable development.
Astana is a large political-administrative, business and cultural centre of the republic. All central authorities of the country, diplomatic missions, headquarters of domestic and foreign companies, leading universities, state-of-the-art medical clinics and significant cultural institutions are located in this city. The shift of the capital has given a powerful impulse to Astana’s economic development. The city’s high economic growth rates attract numerous investors. The volume of attracted investments from the time Astana became the capital has increased by 30 times and the total regional product by 90 times. The share of the city’s economic activity contributes to about 8,5 percent of the nations’s GDP.
